Employment Opportunities
The Attorney General's Office employs approximately 160 individuals in a wide variety of positions. Office policy includes utilization of the state merit system to the fullest extent possible in filling staffing needs. Therefore, most positions require that prospective employees be listed on the state personnel registers (see State Personnel for more details).

The Attorney General's Office is the most diverse law firm in the state. As can be seen from the division description pages, attorneys in the office handle a wide range of legal issues, both at the trial court and appellate level, as well as other types of legal work for the State. Our office periodically looks for qualified lawyers who are willing to work hard to fill our employment needs.
The office maintains two types of legal positions -- Attorneys and Law Clerks. Our Chief Deputy, L. Daniel Morris, Jr., screens and interviews applicants. Based on information collected during the interview process, employment recommendations are then made to the Attorney General.
Attorneys
The office employees approximately 70 in-house attorneys and oversees the legal work of more than 100 attorneys across the state. The office has a number of divisions ranging from criminal prosecution to civil constitutional defense to environmental law. All applicants must be members of the Alabama State Bar or are sitting for the bar exam.
Law Clerks
The Attorney General's Office regularly recruits law students for unpaid summer clerkships from Alabama, Cumberland, Vanderbilt, Tulane, and Emory law schools. We also accept resumes from law students at other schools. Each summer this office hires approximately 20 law clerks with terms set for the first or last half of the summer or the entire summer. Clerks are divided among the divisions to receive a broad range of experience.
